The Severed Thread Blog Tour Interview

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the The Severed Thread Blog Tour hosted by TBR & Beyond Tours.

Check out my post below!

About the Book

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy Romance
Publishing date: February 7th, 2023

Rep: Queer, Lesbian

Content Warning: past abusive/manipulative relationship, abusive parent figure

Synopsis:

Which threads of fate will hold—and which will break?

Clever, bookish Fi and her brash, ax-wielding partner Shane are back in this action packed sequel to the bestselling The Bone Spindle, the gender-flipped Sleeping Beauty retelling, perfect for fans of Sorcery of Thorns and The Cruel Prince.

Fi has awakened the sleeping prince, but the battle for Andar is far from over. The Spindle Witch, the Witch Hunters, and Fi’s own Butterfly Curse all stand between them and happily ever after.

Shane has her partner’s back. But she’s in for the fight of her life against Red, the right hand of the Spindle Witch who she’s also, foolishly, hellbent on saving.

Briar Rose would do anything to restore his kingdom. But there’s a darkness creeping inside him—a sinister bond to the Spindle Witch he can’t escape.

All hopes of restoring Andar rest on deciphering a mysterious book code, finding the hidden city of the last Witches, and uncovering a secret lost for centuries—one that just might hold the key to the Spindle Witch’s defeat. If they can all survive that long…

Set in a world of twisted fairytales, The Severed Thread combines lost ruins, ride-or-die friendships, and heart-pounding romance.

Interview

1.What was it like writing book two? Was it easier or more difficult?

A little of both! I definitely felt like I knew the characters better, and I had such a fun time deepening their relationships—especially Fi and Shane’s ride-or-die partnership. At the same time, I definitely felt a lot more pressure to make sure that the follow-up brought new tension and plot twists without losing what made the first book fun.

2. Was there a scene or character you wrote in the series that was taken out of the story but you wish had been kept?

There was one scene in a very early version where Shane was captured and mouthing off to a group of Witch Hunters. Ultimately I love the story the way it is now, but I will always miss Shane’s snarky backtalk when faced with mortal peril.

3. When you sold The Bone Spindle, did you know it would be a series?

I always knew I wanted The Bone Spindle to be a trilogy. I totally grew up on long fantasy series, and I absolutely love being able to keep journeying with the same characters over multiple books. Many of the ideas have changed and grown over time, but Fi and Shane’s friendship has always been the heart and soul of this series.

4. How old were you when you wrote your first story?

It’s a bit of a cliché, but I have totally always wanted to be an author. I have these “books” from first grade (and I use the term loosely) with nonsensical stories and some scribbly crayon drawings. But there’s an “about the author” section in the back where I declare my intent to write forever.

5. What is your favorite part of writing fantasy?

For The Severed Thread, I really loved being able to craft the magic of the Witches! In the world of this book, each Witch expresses their magic through a medium that is deeply personal. There’s a Witch who uses only paper and ink charms, a magical order known for its ability to walk in dreams and relive memories, and another that can sew spells into cloth. And yes, an evil Witch who works her magic through a spindle and golden thread!

6. What are you working on now?

I’m working on the final book of The Bone Spindle trilogy. It’s absolutely magical to be taking these characters into endgame, especially the dramatic finales for both romances (featuring the most epic Shane and Red kiss yet)!

Author Bio

Leslie Vedder (she/her) is a queer ace author who loves fairytale retellings with girl adventurers and heroes! She grew up on fantasy books, anime, fanfiction and the Lord of the Rings movies, and met her true love in high school choir. She graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in creative writing and currently lives in Colorado with her wife and two spoiled house cats.

When she’s not reading or writing, you can find her watching anime and sci-fi shows, walking in the woods and pretending they’re enchanted forests, or playing old video games. She always collects all the Skulltulas in Zelda and all the Dalmation puppies in Kingdom Hearts.

Her debut YA novel THE BONE SPINDLE (Penguin/Razorbill) was an indie bestseller. The sequel THE SEVERED THREAD comes out Feb 7, 2023. Find her online at leslievedder.com.
