Synopsis

Rapunzel meets “Downton Abbey” in this sweet Gilded Age romance!

Miss Cordelia Jones is an American Princess, but her story is no fairytale.

Eighteen-year-old Cordelia Jones is locked in her tower until she promises to marry Lord Thomas Ashby, the eighth Earl of Farnham. Cordelia doesn’t want to leave her American home or Stuyvesant Bradley, whom she has loved since childhood. But Stuyvesant leaves on a trip and Cordelia is pressured by her overbearing mother to marry a stranger.

Coerced into a loveless marriage, Cordelia finds herself an alien in a decaying English country house where customs and manners are so different from home. Worst yet, accidents seem to befall her at every corner. The more she begins to care for her husband, the more perilous her life becomes. Is she unlucky, or is someone trying to kill the newest cash countess?

Review

I am pretty sure I’ve read almost all of Samantha’s books and I will continue to do so. Not only is this cover stunning but the words on the page are well written, the characters fleshed out and dynamic, and the setting puts you right into the late 1800’s England.

I love how independent and witty Samantha’s writes her main characters. Cordelia was not about to let her mother dictate her life for her own gain but when her mother forces her hand she finds herself thousands of miles across the sea, married to a stranger, and presented with a dilapidated old abbey as her new home.

Thomas’s father left him with a mountain of debt and he now finds himself in America looking for a wife. It would not be his first choice but he will do anything to save his reputation, estate, and all those under his care. When he brings Cordelia back to the Abbey he knows immediately that she is not impressed.

This is a well written story about two strangers whose circumstance will either lead to a long lasting love or an unhappy marriage. Both went into this arranged marriage in love with other people but as their partnership grows they learn to understand one another. Unfortunately when strange things start happening to Cordelia, Thomas realizes that someone in the house is not happy with the arrangement and is determined to chase Cordelia off…or worse.
