The enthralling conclusion to Judy I. Lin’s Book of Tea duology—A Magic Steeped in Poison and A Venom Dark and Sweet—is sure to enchant fans of Adrienne Young and Leigh Bardugo.

A great evil has come to the kingdom of Dàxi. The Banished Prince has returned to seize power, his rise to the dragon throne aided by the mass poisonings that have kept the people bound in fear and distrust.

Ning, a young but powerful shénnóng-shi—a wielder of magic using the ancient and delicate art of tea-making—has escorted Princess Zhen into exile. Joining them is the princess’ loyal bodyguard, Ruyi, and Ning’s newly healed sister, Shu. Together the four young women travel throughout the kingdom in search of allies to help oust the invaders and take back Zhen’s rightful throne.

But the golden serpent still haunts Ning’s nightmares with visions of war and bloodshed. An evil far more ancient than the petty conflicts of men has awoken, and all the magic in the land may not be enough to stop it from consuming the world…

Interview

What was it like writing book two? Was it easier or more difficult?

It was certainly a challenge writing A Venom Dark and Sweet because of the tighter timeline. I usually like to do a few rounds of revisions before sharing it with others, but my editor had the “joy” of reading my first draft. Lucky for me, she gave me lots of suggestions to improve it and I’m happy with how it turned out.

Was there a scene or character you wrote in the duology that was taken out of the story but you wish had been kept?

Originally there were more scenes where Ning was interacting with her father and it showed more of their family dynamic, as well as their story coming full circle at the end. But I did have to cut those scenes because it affected the pacing of the book.

When you sold A Magic Steeped in Poison did you know it would be a duology?

Yes, A Magic Steeped in Poison sold in a two book deal. I discussed plans for the second book with my editor but it wasn’t fully planned out until after the first book was finished. I was revising the first book while drafting the second book, so I was able to add details into the first, which ended up with better continuity overall.

How old were you when you wrote your first story?

The first story I remember completing was when I was twelve. It was a fantasy story about a group of friends who fought monsters to save their kingdom. Not so different from the stories that I am writing now!

What is your favorite part of writing fantasy?

I love being able to imagine and inhabit a whole new world filled with magic! Playing around with how magic would change this world and affect those who have to live with or without the magic is always a lot of fun.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on another YA fantasy project. This one is influenced by gothic themes and contains more romance! I’m excited to share more details about it soon.
