About the Book

Spellhacker (2)Spellhacker

by M.K. England
Publisher: HarperCollins Children’s Books
Release Date: January 21st 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
From the author of The Disasters, this genre-bending YA fantasy heist story is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.
In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.
Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.
But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.
No pressure.

5 Stars

This fast-paced YA Fantasy feels almost dystopian at times. It is one adventure to the next as four friends are on the run after the heist of their life.

Diz is an expert hacker and when she gets offered a job that could change her life, and keep her friends together, she doesn’t hesitate to take it. Diz is an orphan who has learned to survive on a day to day basis with the support of her three best friends. She’s not the most pleasant person, and at often times will drive you crazy, but her fear of losing her friends, her routine, is what motivates her to take on a job that goes horribly wrong. You’re going to get frustrated with her and her choices all why understanding why she will do anything to protect the family she’s built around her.

Diz, Jaison, Remi, and Ania’s friendship is put to the test after they pull of one last heist and find themselves on the run. You’ll be put on a roller coaster of intense situations as the four of them try to find answers to the biggest disaster since the spellplague took place 10 years earlier. Follow these four teenagers as they sneak their way into a local university, disguise themselves in order to board a train, and navigate a minefield that includes crazy rabbits all while trying to figure out how their friendship is going to survive the mess their in.

M.K. England does a fantastic job of building high stress situations that keep you turning the pages. I enjoyed The Disasters and was so excited to get the opportunity to read Spellhacker! I loved every minute of it! I hope you’ll pick them both up and enjoy the ride!

About the Author

M.K. England is an author and librarian who grew up on the Space Coast of Florida and now calls rural Virginia home. When she’s not writing or librarianing, MK can be found drowning in fandom, rolling dice at the gaming table, digging in the garden, or feeding her video game addiction. She loves Star Wars with a desperate, heedless passion. It’s best if you never speak of Sherlock Holmes in her presence. You’ll regret it.
THE DISASTERS is her debut novel. Follow her at http://www.mkengland.com.
