I’ve always liked scary stories and romance as far back as I can remember. I think it’s because both cause intense emotions, and have a way of drawing you into a story and connecting with characters at such a heightened level of feelings.
Of my top ten, I had to include two Babysitter’s Club and two Girls of Canby Hall, because aside from horror and romance, these were the two series that really taught me the value of female friendship. They both included girl groups who were there for each other through every up and down.
While the late 80’s/early 90’s were rife with media that constantly pitted girls against each other, that tried to teach us that we were each other’s enemies, these books refused to do so.
Instead, they showcased how important girl friendships are and the amazing power we have when we lift each other up. This, more than anything else, is something I’ve carried with me through life and try to emulate in my own writing.
While fear and swoons are fun escapes, a solid foundation of friendship is what kept me coming back to certain series again and again.
