About All the Bad Apples
Title: All the Bad Apples
Author: Moira Fowley-Doyle
Publisher: Penguin
Release Date: August 1, 2019
Genre: Young Adult, Mystery, Contemporary
Synopsis:
The day after the funeral all our mourning clothes hung out on the line like sleeping bats. ‘This will be really embarrassing,’ I kept saying to my family, ‘when she shows up at the door in a week or two.’
When Deena’s wild and mysterious sister Mandy disappears – presumed dead – her family are heartbroken. But Mandy has always been troubled. It’s just another bad thing to happen to Deena’s family. Only Deena refuses to believe it’s true.
And then the letters start arriving. Letters from Mandy, claiming that their family’s blighted history is not just bad luck or bad decisions – but a curse, handed down through the generations. Mandy has gone in search of the curse’s roots, and now Deena must find her. What they find will heal their family’s rotten past – or rip it apart forever.

Interview
1. What drew you to writing YA mystery novels?
I’ve always loved & read YA, & always write my first drafts entirely for my teenage self. I’ve also always been drawn magic realism & mystery because I love the idea that truth & fiction can overlap, reality and fantasy intertwine, and that two seemingly opposing things can be true at the same time. I love how magic realism blends the real and the mysterious and makes the ordinary extraordinary. It’s a little like the way I live my life.
2. What is your writing process like? Was it different for each book you’ve published or the same?
My writing process is very similar for every book I write, although I did do more research for this one, tried to plot it & failed spectacularly. The way I write is that when I start I only have a vague idea of the story I want to tell. I have a handful of characters & a bunch of seemingly disconnected images (in this case an apple tree, handwritten letters, crumbling cottages, three old witches, the sea and a bull), I have a mood in mind, and a sense of the magic of the story. And I sit down to write and let that story tell itself to me, as if by magic. The first draft I end up with is a mess of mood and details, characters’ feelings and loving descriptions of landscape. The following drafts are all about my editors gently nudging me towards some semblance of a plot.
3. What inspires you as a writer?
Other writers. Poetry. Getting out of the city. The city. My teenage diaries. People’s stories. People. Stories.
4. What are you currently working on?
Something secret that has not yet even reached the mess of mood draft stage yet, but whose details include flowers, witches, blackbirds, and a house with a detailed natal chart.
5. What are you currently reading?
I’ve just started The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon which I’m loving.
About the Author
Moïra Fowley-Doyle is half-French, half-Irish and lives in Dublin with her husband, two daughters and two cats. Moïra’s French half likes red wine and dark books in which everybody dies. Her Irish half likes tea and happy endings.
Moïra spent several years at university studying vampires in young adult fiction before concentrating on writing young adult fiction with no vampires in it whatsoever. She wrote her first novel at the age of eight, when she was told that if she wrote a story about spiders she wouldn’t be afraid of them any more. Moïra is still afraid of spiders, but has never stopped writing stories.
