ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: The Bone Charmer
Author: Breeana Shields
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Release Date: May 21, 2019
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
In Saskia’s world, bones are the source of all power. They tell the future, reveal the past, and expose secrets in the present. Each village has a designated seer who performs readings for the townsfolk, and in Midwood, the Bone Charmer is Saskia’s mother.
On the day of her kenning—a special bone reading that determines the apprenticeships of all seventeen-year-olds—Saskia’s worst fears come true. She receives an assignment to train as a Bone Charmer, like her mother, and even worse, a match-making reading that pairs her with Bram—a boy who has suspicious tattoos that hint of violence.
Saskia knows her mother saw multiple paths for her, yet chose one she knew Saskia wouldn’t want. Their argument leads to a fracture in one of the bones. Broken bones are always bad luck, but this particular set of bones have been infused with extra magic, and so the break has devastating consequences—Saskia’s future has split as well. Now she will live her two potential paths simultaneously. Only one future can survive. And Saskia’s life is in danger in both.

Having published a Duology already, what was it like to write this new story?
It was a breath of fresh air! Starting a new story with new characters is always so much fun. The possibilities are endless, and the very beginning of a new series always feels a lot like play for me. Of course, that all changes once I’m deep into the story with lots of problems that I’m trying to solve and no idea what I’m doing!
What is your writing process like? Was it different from when you wrote Poison’s Kiss to when you wrote The Bone Charmer?
I used to describe myself as a pantser, meaning I only outlined lightly—if at all—and then just wrote the book from beginning to end figuring out the story along the way. But once my first book was published, my process has had to evolve a bit. After the first novel, you’re often pitching things on proposal, and editors like a little more than a vague idea and a “Trust me, it’s going to be great!” So, I’ve had to learn to outline more. And although I really hated it at first, it’s actually started to grow on me. I was always worried that having an outline would hamper my creativity and make me feel boxed in, but that hasn’t been the case. I might eventually turn into a full-fledged plotter after all.
What are you currently working on?
Right now, I’m working on edits for the sequel to The Bone Charmer, but once I’m done with those, I plan to turn to a brand-new fantasy project that I’m really excited about.
Do you have any pre-writing rituals that you do before you sit down to write, or do while you’re writing?
I often read whatever I wrote the previous day before I start working on new material. I find it helps ground me in the project and gently bring me back into the story. Depending on the book, I will often have soft music playing in the background (but never anything with lyrics, because it’s too distracting). I always have a Diet Dr Pepper on hand—a habit I’m trying to break, but realistically, probably won’t.
Did you always want to be a writer or was it something that came to you later on?
I always loved to write. I used to make up stories and then pay my younger sister to illustrate them. (I’m a terrible artist.). The first time a teacher complimented me on my writing was in fourth grade, and from then on, I was completely hooked. But it wasn’t until high school that I realized I could actually have a career that would pay me to write. (PAY me!). At that point, I thought I would be a journalist, but in college I really fell in love with creative writing and never looked back.
From Chapter Two
“Saskia.” A familiar voice sends a thrill racing up my spine.
Declan’s breath dances against my neck. He probably shouldn’t be standing so close to me. Not yet. What if one of us is bone-matched with someone else? The thought opens a pit in my stomach. My mother wouldn’t dare. Not when she knows how we feel about each other.
I step out of Declan’s reach before I spin to face him. A wide grin notches a dimple on his left cheek, and his vibrant green eyes spark with mischief. He has combed his normally unruly hair into submission, save for a disobedient whorl just above his forehead that makes him look like a kitten that’s been freshly groomed by its mother.
“Morning,” I say. He lets his gaze hold mine for a beat too long, and my cheeks flush. Another slow smile creeps over his face like drizzling honey.
“I’ll be waiting for you over there.” He winks at me before he walks away. I glance at the other girls to see if anyone noticed the brief impropriety, but no one is paying any attention to me. It’s the kind of day where our thoughts are only of ourselves.
I watch Declan until he is swallowed up by the crowd of boys, my heart swelling before worry shrinks it again. I should know better than to love anyone before the bones have spoken.
But there’s something about Declan—his easy smile, his full-bodied laugh, the carefree way he approaches life, as if he has no doubt that fate will always work in his favor. If anyone is confident about the results of the kenning, it should be me. But I’m not. Not at all.
