There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook.
First there was the car accident—two girls gone after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know why he did it. Monica’s sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they lost.
That was five years ago. Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it’s not that easy. She just wants to forget. Only, Monica’s world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad’s desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn’t over. Some people in town know more than they’re saying. And somehow Monica is at the center of it all.
There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn’t mean anyone else is safe.
My Review
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to make it out to Santa Monica for YALLWest and when I preparing for what booths I was going to hit I knew immediately that I was going to get an ARC for this book! I didn’t care how long I would have to wait in line, I just knew this was what I wanted! I didn’t read many YA Thrillers until last year and one of the first ones I read was Little Monsters and I loved it!
The Cheerleaders did not disappoint! It’s unique story leads you to connect the dots to find out what really happened to “the Cheerleaders”.
Monica is the little sister of one of the Cheerleaders who died tragically five years earlier and as the anniversary approaches she decides she wants to find out more about what lead her sister to taking her own life.
Monica’s character is broken at the beginning of this book and no matter how hard it is going to be to find the answers she is looking for she is ready for them. Her relationship with her mother is strained because she feels her mother only sees her dead sister Jennifer every time she looks at her. Her friends are growing apart as well which is eerily similar to what her sister is going through in the weeks leading up to the tragic deaths of her and four of her closest friends. Monica becomes friends with a girl who has always been there but hasn’t always been seen and together they start to piece together what was going on in Monica’s sisters life. As the two of them piece together what really happened you’ll get to glimpse of the story along the way when you read chapters from Jennifer’s point of few from different events that happen to her.
Kara does such a wonderful job of leading you in different directions so that you get an ending you did not anticipate! She weaves the story together brilliantly piece by piece in a way that keeps you on your toes and yearning to find out the truth! She definitely knows how to write a thrilling novel!
