Kamzin has always dreamed of becoming one of the Emperor’s royal explorers, the elite climbers tasked with mapping the wintry, mountainous Empire and spying on its enemies. She knows she could be the best in the world, if only someone would give her a chance.

But everything changes when the mysterious and eccentric River Shara, the greatest explorer ever known, arrives in her village and demands to hire Kamzin—not her older sister Lusha, as everyone had expected—for his next expedition. This is Kamzin’s chance to prove herself—even though River’s mission to retrieve a rare talisman for the emperor means climbing Raksha, the tallest and deadliest mountain in the Aryas. Then Lusha sets off on her own mission to Raksha with a rival explorer who is determined to best River, and Kamzin must decide what’s most important to her: protecting her sister from the countless perils of the climb or beating her to the summit.

The challenges of climbing Raksha are unlike anything Kamzin expected—or prepared for—with avalanches, ice chasms, ghosts, and even worse at every turn. And as dark secrets are revealed, Kamzin must unravel the truth of their mission and of her companions—while surviving the deadliest climb she has ever faced.

Heather Fawcett did a beautiful job building the world found in Even the Darkest Stars. You are transported through the Winding Pass to the base of the Mountain Rashka. The writing is so well done that you feel as if you are standing at the base of the monstrous winter mountains and can feel the cold in your bones.

Kamzin is brave, intelligent, and striving to show her father, and the rest of her village, that she is capable of becoming the explorer she has always wanted to be. I liked her character a lot because she is so witty and doesn’t let anyone push her around. She is in constant competition with her older sister Lusha and so when the Emperor’s royal explorer asks her to take him up the Mountain Rashka to recover a rare talisman, she jumps at the chance. She pushed on through any obstacle they faced along their journey without complaint. I enjoyed the way Fawcett showed you that even with her tough exterior Kamzin struggles internally with proving herself among her comrades.

Kamzin’s best friend Tem could not allow Kamzin to trek up the Mountain Rashka without him there to protect and support her. Kamzin’s lack of magic may not affect her ability to map out their journey but Tem wants to make sure she has someone along the way with the magical abilities the expedition may require. Tem and Kamzin have had history but you can definitely feel the platonic love they have for each other in the present time. I liked that his character kind of helped to ground Kamzin, and helped her in staying rational throughout their travels.

River was probably the most interesting character in this book. You aren’t quite sure if you can trust him or not. It seems like no one else does but Kamzin finds she’s may be falling for the royal explorer beyond what she’d have expected. He’s so mysterious that you’re not quite sure of his true intentions and motives. He is such a dynamic character and I can’t wait to see what Fawcett does with his character in the rest of the series.

Awe! The familiars in this book are so much fun. You have one that is a loyal companion for life, cute and cuddly, and always there. The other on the other hand is fierce, mystical, and a bit on the creepy side.

By the end of the book you’re not sure what or who to believe, and have more questions than you’d think possible. I’ll definitely check out the next installment to see where Kamzin’s journey leads her!

ABOUT HEATHER FAWCETT

heather-fawcett-author

I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, where I enjoy wandering around in the wilderness and only occasionally getting lost. I’ve also spent extended periods of time in Italy, where I learned very little Italian but ate quite a lot of pizza, and Ireland, where I searched half-successfully for puffins and selkies.

Before becoming a writer I worked, among other things, as an archaeologist, a technical writer, and a backstage assistant for a Shakespearean theatre company (which I could write several novels about). I have a Master’s degree in English Literature and briefly considered becoming a professor, before I realized it involved more than reading books, drinking excessive amounts of tea, and wearing colourful elbow patches.

I’m represented by the amazing Brianne Johnson at Writers House. EVEN THE DARKEST STARS, my first novel, was purchased by HarperCollins/Balzer+Bray at auction in a six-figure, two-book deal. www.heatherfawcettbooks.com
